Just weeks after the death of 9"Mad")King Ludwig II in 1886, the castle was opened to the public. The shy king had built the castle in order to withdraw from public life – now vast numbers of people came to view his private refuge. Today Neuschwanstein is one of the most popular castles in Europe. Each year 1.3 million people visit this site. Americans may find the castle to look faintly familiar: it is the castle Walt Disney used as his inspiration in creating the iconic Disneyland castle. Neuschwanstein castle is incredibly idyllic inside and out (unfortunately, no photos were allowed inside). However, movement in the foundation area has to be continuously monitored, and the sheer rock walls must be repeatedly secured. The cold, wet climate also has a detrimental effect on the limestone façades, which will have to be renovated section by section in coming years.

oh hey i have been meaning to tell you, the office i sit in all day has a huge poster of this castle.. it makes me think of our trip everyday. also the fact that i was there and walked around.. crazy!
